Centrifugal blowers, axial fans and the impellers and housings that go with them, for ventilation, dust extraction, combustion air, drying and process cooling. Selected by volume flow against static pressure — the air-side equivalent of a pump's duty point.
Blade form decides most of the behaviour. A backward-curved centrifugal impeller is efficient and non-overloading: its power draw peaks and then falls, so the motor cannot be overloaded by a duct that turns out to be more open than designed. A forward-curved impeller moves more air for its size at low pressure but its power rises continuously with flow, which is how motors get burned out on systems commissioned without a damper. An axial fan moves large volumes against very little pressure and is the wrong choice the moment ductwork is involved.
Dust extraction has its own constraint: the impeller must tolerate the material passing through it, which rules out narrow forward-curved blades regardless of the efficiency numbers.

How to choose
Volume flow and static pressure together, from the actual duct run rather than a rule of thumb — duct friction is usually the larger half of the pressure and the half most often underestimated. Then blade form: backward-curved where efficiency and a non-overloading power curve matter, radial where dust passes through the impeller, axial only where there is essentially no ductwork. Then check the motor is rated for the worst case, not the design case, if there is no damper to throttle against.

Backward-curved or forward-curved?
Backward-curved for efficiency and safety: its power curve peaks and falls, so the motor cannot be overloaded if the system turns out less restrictive than designed. Forward-curved moves more air for its size at low pressure but its power rises with flow, so it needs a damper and a correctly sized motor.
What fan for dust extraction?
A radial-blade impeller. Narrow forward-curved blades clog and unbalance, and an unbalanced impeller destroys bearings quickly. Efficiency is secondary to being able to pass the material.
Can you supply just the impeller and keep the housing?
Usually yes, and it is much cheaper. Send the impeller outside diameter, width, vane count, bore and keyway, plus the operating speed so we can specify balancing.
