The single most common error in this category is buying by nameplate power. A pump is not defined by its kilowatts but by its duty point — the flow it must deliver against the head the system imposes. Two pumps of identical power can have completely different curves, and a pump running far from its best efficiency point will cavitate, vibrate and destroy its own bearings while consuming more energy than a correctly sized unit delivering the same flow.
The second is impeller material. Egyptian water carries sand and dissolved salts; a cast iron impeller that lasts fifteen years on clean water can be scrapped in two on borehole supply. Material is a duty decision, not a cost decision.

How to choose
Establish the duty point before looking at any pump: the flow you need and the total head the system imposes, including static lift, pipe friction and any pressure the discharge has to overcome. Only then read curves, and choose a pump whose best efficiency point sits near your duty rather than at the end of its range. Then impeller and seal material against the medium — abrasives, chlorides and temperature each rule out materials. Then check NPSH available against NPSH required, because a pump that cavitates will not last whatever else is right about it.

Why do you ask for flow and head instead of motor power?
Because power does not identify a pump. Flow against head is the duty point, and two pumps of the same kilowatts can have entirely different curves. Sizing on power alone is how pumps end up running off their efficiency point, cavitating and failing early.
What impeller material for borehole or canal water?
Not cast iron if there is sand in the water. Bronze, duplex stainless or a hard-coated impeller depending on how abrasive and how saline. Send a water analysis if you have one; a rough description of the source is enough to narrow it.
Can you supply just an impeller for an existing pump?
Often yes, and it is much cheaper than a new unit. Send the pump make, model and serial number, plus the impeller diameter and number of vanes if you can measure them.
