Gantry machines fail in a specific way. The motors and drives are usually adequate; what gives is the structure, because a portal that racks a fraction of a degree under acceleration puts the tool somewhere other than where the controller thinks it is. Stiffness matters more than mass, and the joints matter more than the beams — a 40x80 extrusion is stiff enough for most router gantries, but bolted through a single corner bracket it will still flex at the joint.

We list extrusion profiles by series and slot width, and mounting hardware by the profile it fits, so a build can be specified as a set rather than assembled from guesses. Cable carriers are sized by the bend radius the cable itself needs, which is usually larger than builders expect.

How to choose

Size the structure from the span and the cutting force, not from the motor. Deflection scales with the cube of the span, so doubling an unsupported beam length makes it eight times more flexible — shortening the span or adding a support is nearly always cheaper than a heavier profile. Then treat every joint as the weak point it is: two brackets per corner, or a machined plate, rather than one bracket carrying a moment. Then size the cable carrier from the cable's own minimum bend radius.

Which extrusion profile for a router gantry?

For a span under a metre, 40x80 in a heavy series is usually adequate; beyond that, either go to 40x160 or add a mid support. Send the span, the moving mass and the cutting force and we will size it rather than guess.

Do you supply extrusion cut to length?

Yes, cut square to length with end faces machined where you need them to butt against a plate. State the tolerance you need on length, since standard saw cut is not the same as a machined end.

How do I size a cable carrier?

From the cable, not the machine. Take the largest cable's minimum bend radius, add clearance, and size the carrier to that; then check the inner height and width against the full bundle including any air line.
