Hoses, fittings, manifolds, cylinders, valves and FRL units for hydraulic and pneumatic circuits. Bought by machine builders, maintenance departments and anyone keeping presses, injection moulding machines or automated lines running.

Two decisions govern almost everything here: pressure rating and thread standard. Get the first wrong and the assembly fails, usually at the fitting rather than the hose. Get the second wrong and it will not seal, or worse, it will appear to seal and then leak under pressure — BSP and NPT threads will start into each other and neither will hold, because one is parallel with a 55-degree form and the other tapered with 60 degrees.

We name the standard on every line: BSPP and BSPT, NPT, JIC 37-degree flare, SAE O-ring boss, and ISO 6432 and ISO 15552 for pneumatic cylinder mountings. That is what lets a fitting be ordered against an existing circuit rather than by taking the old one to a counter.

How to choose

Working pressure first, and specify the burst rating you need rather than assuming a safety factor. Then the thread standard — identify what is already on the machine before ordering, because BSP and NPT are close enough to start and far enough apart to leak. Then the medium and temperature, which decide the seal and hose liner material: nitrile for mineral oil, EPDM for water glycol, and never the two swapped. Then flow, which sets the bore; an undersized hose does not stop the circuit working, it just wastes pressure as heat.

How do I tell BSP from NPT?

Thread form and taper. BSP is 55 degrees, NPT is 60. BSPP is parallel and seals on a bonded washer or O-ring; BSPT and NPT are tapered and seal on the threads. If a fitting starts easily then stops after two turns, you have mixed the two — do not force it.

Can you make hose assemblies to length?

Yes. Send the length between fitting faces, both end fittings, the working pressure and the medium. Specify the length under pressure if the hose moves, because hose shortens slightly when pressurised.

What is an FRL unit and do I need one?

Filter, regulator and lubricator on a compressed air line. You need at least the filter and regulator: Egyptian compressed air carries water and scale, and both destroy cylinder seals and valve spools faster than anything else on the line.
