Impellers

Replacement impellers for centrifugal pumps, blowers and fans, in cast iron, bronze, stainless steel and engineered polymer. The wearing part of a rotating machine, and usually the cheapest way to bring an ageing unit back to its original duty.

An impeller wears in a way that is easy to miss. It does not fail suddenly; it loses vane thickness and edge profile gradually, and the pump quietly delivers less flow at the same power until someone measures it. A unit running fifteen per cent below its rated flow is often assumed to need replacing when the impeller alone has gone.

Identifying a replacement needs the pump make, model and serial number where available, plus three measurements: outside diameter, number of vanes, and the bore and keyway of the shaft it fits. How to choose

Match the hydraulic form first — closed, open or semi-open — because that is what sets the pump's curve and its tolerance for solids. Then diameter, which can sometimes be trimmed to move the duty point deliberately but must never be guessed. Then the material against the medium, and be honest about abrasives: an impeller is the part that meets them first. Then the bore, keyway and any balance requirement, since an unbalanced impeller destroys bearings faster than a worn one loses flow.

How do I know the impeller is worn rather than the pump?

Measure flow and pressure against the original curve. If the pump draws normal current but delivers noticeably less flow at the same head, and the bearings are quiet, the impeller is the usual culprit.

Can you make an impeller from my worn one?

Yes. Send the worn part with photographs and the three key measurements — outside diameter, vane count, bore and keyway. We machine these in-house, which is often the only route for an obsolete pump.

Does the replacement need balancing?

Anything running above a few hundred rpm, yes. State the operating speed with the enquiry and we will include balancing to the appropriate grade rather than leaving it to be discovered on commissioning.
