Air systems are specified by volume flow and static pressure, and static pressure is where most designs go wrong. Duct friction, bends, filters and grilles each take a share, and the total is usually larger than a first estimate — a system commissioned against an underestimated pressure delivers less air than designed and the fan cannot be made to compensate after the fact. Working out the pressure properly before selecting the fan is cheaper than replacing it.

Filters carry their own grading. The old EU/EN 779 classes have been replaced by ISO 16890, which rates filters by the fraction of particulate they remove in defined size bands rather than by an average — a more honest measure, and one that matters in Egyptian conditions where the dust loading is high and a filter chosen on an average figure blinds quickly.

How to choose

Calculate the static pressure from the actual duct run — length, bends, filters and terminal devices — rather than from a rule of thumb, then select the fan against flow and that pressure together. Then the filtration grade from ISO 16890 against what is actually in the air, and size the filter area generously: doubling the area roughly halves the face velocity and multiplies filter life far more than proportionally. Then check that access for changing filters actually exists, because a filter nobody can reach does not get changed.

What replaced the old F7 and F9 filter classes?

ISO 16890, which grades by the proportion of particulate removed in defined size bands — ePM1, ePM2.5 and ePM10 — rather than by a single average. An old F7 maps roughly to ePM1 50-65% but the correspondence is not exact, so specify in ISO terms if the requirement is documented.

Why does static pressure matter more than fan size?

Because a fan delivers its rated flow only at its rated pressure. If the real duct resistance is higher than the design assumed, flow falls and no amount of fan speed recovers it without exceeding the motor rating. Getting the pressure right is what makes the fan selection valid.
