The mounting is the first constraint and the one most often discovered late. Industrial robot wrists follow ISO 9409-1, which fixes the bolt circle, pilot diameter and pin position for a given flange size — a 50-4-M6 flange takes a specific pattern and nothing else. Get that right and most tooling bolts straight on; get it wrong and the whole assembly needs an adapter plate machined.

After that it is payload and cycle. Payload includes the tooling itself, the part, and the moment they create at the wrist, which is what actually limits a robot rather than the raw mass figure. A gripper mounted 200 mm out with a 3 kg part loads the wrist far more than the same part held close.

How to choose

Confirm the wrist flange to ISO 9409-1 first — the designation is on the robot drawing and it determines what will bolt on without machining. Then work out the moment at the wrist, not just the mass: multiply the load by its distance from the flange face and check it against the robot's rated wrist torque, because that is the figure most integrations exceed. Then the gripping method against the part: vacuum for flat and rigid, jaws for irregular, magnetic only for ferrous and never where a power failure would drop the part on someone.

How do I know which adapter plate I need?

From the ISO 9409-1 designation on the robot's wrist — something like 50-4-M6, giving the bolt circle diameter, number of holes and thread. It is on the robot drawing. Send it with the gripper model and we will confirm whether an adapter is needed at all.

Vacuum or mechanical gripper?

Vacuum for flat, rigid, clean surfaces — it is fast, light and cheap. Mechanical jaws for irregular shapes, porous or oily surfaces, and anywhere a loss of air must not drop the part. Vacuum needs a genuinely dry air supply, which in Egyptian conditions means a filter and a dryer, not just a filter.

Can you make a custom end effector?

Yes. This is one of the categories where our own machine shop does the work. Send the part drawing, the robot flange designation and the cycle time, and we will quote the tooling and the adapter plate together.
